Are Partial Dentures Right for You?

If you don’t want to get full dentures or you’re not a good candidate for dental implants, partial dentures are a great alternative. They can be attached to the remaining teeth with metal frameworks or attached to the gums with denture glue. They will help you chew food, retain your facial structure, and speak with more clarity.

Partial dentures are a more affordable option than dental implants. They are also the best solution for replacing missing teeth if you don’t have the bone density needed to support dental implants. But are they right for you?

Speaking with your dentist is the best way to make the right decision, but in the meantime, here are the three most important things to consider.

1: The Number of Missing Teeth

A dental bridge can only replace up to three missing teeth. If you have more than three missing teeth, or if the teeth on either side of the gap are not strong enough to support a bridge, partial dentures are your best option.

2: Your Ability to Take Care of Your Dentures

You will have to put a great deal of care into maintaining your partial dentures. If you don’t take care of them, they can get discolored, warped, or broken and need replacement sooner. You will have to brush your dentures daily, soak them overnight, and handle them carefully to avoid  accidental damage.

3: The Adjustment Period

After you get dentures, there will be an adjustment period. You might have to deal with changes in your speech patterns, discomfort in the gums or feelings of insecurity. It also takes time to learn how to wear removable dentures and get used to using the metal anchors or denture adhesive. Patience and consistency are necessary during the adjustment period, but if you’re having trouble or they’re causing pain, your dentist can help.
