5 Fun Alternatives to Halloween Candy

Looking for a few sugar-free options for trick-or-treaters? How about skipping the candy altogether?

Halloween is one of the most celebrated holidays of the year. And it’s also the one that dentists fear the most. Sugar does increase their risk of cavities, but the last thing we want is to take all the fun out of Halloween! A little bit of candy is okay, but small toys, stickers, and bubbles can be just as fun.

What to Give Kids Instead of Candy for Halloween

1: Stickers or Temporary Tattoos

Kids love stickers. There are a variety of colors and designs to give to them. Look for Halloween-themed stickers with ghosts, bats, or their favorite cartoon characters. Try to buy the stickers in bulk, so you can have a basket for kids to choose from.

2: Small Toys

The small toys you can buy in bulk at the dollar make great trick-or-treat prizes. Tiny puzzles, yo-yos, bouncy balls, play-doh, pencils, or novelty erasers will last a lot longer than Halloween candy. (And for kids with dairy allergies who can’t have milk chocolate, a prize is always better than a candy bar.) Make sure to choose a few toys that are appropriate for toddlers as well as a few for older kids.

3: Glow Sticks

Glow Sticks are both fun and useful on Halloween night. Kids can use them to light their way or to spot friends when they’re trick-or-treating after dusk. They can even be a cool costume accessory, like a lightsaber or a magic wand.

4: Slime

Sensory toys are always a hit, and kids of all ages love slime. Four year olds will have just as much fun with it as fourteen year olds. Plus, slime is creepy and gooey and totally in keeping with Halloween themes.

5: Bubbles

There are small bottles of bubbles that can be fun for kids. Bubbles are a fun choice for younger children, especially. They’re cost effective and easy to give out during Halloween and as a trick-or-treat.
