16 Jun Can Dental Pulp Cause Tooth Pain?
The living tissue in the center of your tooth is called the pulp. It contains all the blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerves that keep a tooth alive and healthy. If the pulp becomes damaged or infected, it can cause intense pain, and you will need urgent dental care to save the tooth.
What Does the Dental Pulp Do?
Teeth have three layers: the enamel, the dentin, and the pulp. The gel-like pulp is actually what builds the middle layer of the tooth, the dentin. The pulp contains the blood vessels that deliver all the proteins and minerals needed to keep the dentin strong and healthy.
The dental pulp protects the tooth in other ways as well:
- It contains immune cells that help detect and fight infections.
- It keeps your teeth hydrated, preventing brittleness and breaks.
- The nerves inside the pulp detect changes in temperature, letting you know when your food or drink is too hot or cold. They also sense pressure, which keeps you from damaging your teeth by biting down too hard.
Damage to the Pulp of a Tooth Can Cause Intense Pain
The pulp of a tooth gets strong protection from the enamel and dentin, but sometimes that armor fails. Infections and damage make the sensitive nerve endings in the pulp to go haywire, causing anything from mild discomfort to intense pain.
Cavities, cracks, and thinning enamel can expose the pulp to bacterial infections. And if the pulp gets infected, the tooth could end up dying. You will need a root canal procedure to remove the infected tissue and save the tooth.
Symptoms of a tooth infection include:
- Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Swelling in your gums, cheek, or jaw
- Chronic bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
- Throbbing, intense pain
- Fever
If the infection goes untreated and the tooth dies, an extraction is the only option. So if you start to feel pain, don’t wait to see a dentist.
